The Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI) is advancing as an open research platform that
drives scientific and technological progress
and the growth of the research industry,
leveraging world-class research capabilities
and large-scale, leading research facilities and equipment.
Established in 1988 as a government-funded research institute, KBSI was founded to promote basic science in Korea, with goals that include overseeing national research equipment, conducting R&D in analytical science and technology, providing research support, and facilitating collaborative research.
Over the past 35 years, KBSI has aimed to establish itself as a world-class open research platform where researchers from Korea and abroad gather, utilizing advanced research infrastructure and outstanding research personnel that serve as the foundation for scientific and technological advancement.
In particular, in July 2021, KBSI was designated as the lead institution for the Ochang next-generation multipurpose synchrotron radiation accelerator construction project, scheduled for completion in 2027. This marks a leap from being a research equipment-centered institute to an institution that oversees national research facilities and equipment. Building on our accumulated research capabilities, we will contribute to national scientific and technological progress and public well-being not only through research support and collaboration but also through analytical science research and equipment development, as well as fostering creative future professionals for the research industry.
