Lab-on-a-Chip : Next Generation Molecular Diagnostics
Biochip is a microchip with biological molecules such as DNA and protein attached on solid surface. Biochip is mainly divided with two type : Microarray and Lab-on-a-Chip(LOC). Microarray is a biochip tens of thousands of DNA or protein on the glass(or Silicon Wafer) to analyze its binding pattern. Also in case of DNA chips, there are two types : cDNA chip oligonucleotide chip.
LOC is unique biochips to detect the small amount of biological samples on the chip using microsensing technology. Currently, a major goal is to integrate different kinds of biological processes on a single chip.
Biochip is to be used as a core device in field of functional genomics, functional proteomics, investigate the relation of gene & protein based on bioinformatics.
On addition to these, there are many emerging applications such as genetic diagnosis, drug discovery, safety test of food, criminal discrimination, antibiotics resistance test.
Thus, there is intense competition undergoing to secure financial opportunities among many countries, led by the US. The Biochip market is estimated to be 3 billion dollars by it is expected to grow over 30% every year. Currently, Affymetrix is the market leader for DNA chips. However, Motorola and other biotech-related companies rushing into the market.
It is expected that the current trend of biochips will continue and simple microarrays will continue to be an important tool. However, in order to create the market potential many people project, we believe that LOCs will play an increasing role in the future.
